Tilt or touch? Settling the racing controls debate

May 13, 2026 · Mateusz Kowalczyk

Every racing game forum eventually turns into a tilt-versus-touch argument, so we decided to test it properly. We took Nitro Verge and a couple of other arcade racers, ran the same tracks a dozen times each way, and compared our lap times and, more importantly, how they felt.

Touch controls won on consistency. When you're on a train and can't wave your phone around, on-screen steering just keeps you steady. It's also easier to make tiny corrections mid-drift without over-committing.

Tilt, though, felt better once we relaxed. On a good game with a proper dead zone, steering by leaning the phone becomes strangely natural, and our fastest single laps came from tilt. The catch is that it punishes tension; grip the phone too hard and you'll wobble everywhere.

Our takeaway is boring but true: it depends on where you play. At home on the couch, tilt. On the move, touch. And avoid any racer that only offers one, because that usually means they didn't put the work into either.
